Gabriel Dumont scores twice for Hamilton in 3-1 win over Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Gabriel Dumont scored twice to lead the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 3-1 over the Abbotsford Heat in American Hockey League action Saturday night.

Dumont scored in the opening minute of the third period to give his club a 2-1 lead after tying the game late in the second. Maxime Macenauer added an empty netter to clinch the win.

Dustin Tokarski made 26 saves in the victory. Since losing in a shootout to Abbotsford on Dec. 22, Hamilton (17-14-4) has won five straight games, moving into seventh place in the Western Conference.

Markus Granlund scored for Abbotsford (23-11-2), while Joey MacDonald stopped 24 shots in the loss.

The Heat opened the scoring at 11:31 of the first thanks to a great effort and a little luck.

Kane Lafranchise stretched to keep a puck onside during a power play, skated in and tried to pass it in front. The centring feed deflected off a Bulldog stick right to Granlund, who roofed it on Tokarski for his 14th of the season.

Mike Blunden was the most dangerous Bulldog in the first period, hitting the post in the opening minutes and then getting two quality cracks with less than 20 seconds left. He one-timed a feed from Martin St. Pierre from the low slot, which MacDonald kicked out, and then MacDonald gobbled up the rebound attempt by Blunden to sustain the Heat's lead heading into the intermission.

But a smooth move by Blunden led to the equalizer in the second period. Nick Tarnasky rang the puck behind the net to Blunden, who pulled it out front and quickly put a shot on net. Dumont was in the crease to chip the puck home for his first of the game at 16:48.

Dumont gave his club the lead just 49 seconds into the third. Sven Andrighetto walked off the boards and took a shot on net. The five-foot-10 Dumont battled for position with 6-6 defenceman Chris Breen and shovelled home his seventh of the year, beating MacDonald five-hole.
