Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal left the game Saturday against the New York Islanders with a lower-body injury and did not return.

Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal left the game Saturday night against the New York Islanders with a lower-body injury and did not return.

Staal left the ice in the second period after playing 11 shifts and seeing 9:48 of ice time.

Staal had five points (one goal) in the previous two games.

It is unknown if he will be able to play Sunday against the Nashville Predators. He has missed one game over the past three seasons.

"He'll get assessed tonight and see if he's ready to go tomorrow," coach Kirk Muller said.

Quote of the Day

That was something I've been dreaming of, something I've told myself before the third period I was going to do ... It was an amazing feeling. It's hard to describe. I didn't believe it went in at first but when I saw all the reaction and all the fans going crazy and my teammates going crazy, it's just an unbelievable feeling. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know whether to jump or just skate and do a Theo Fleury. I don't think I'm the same caliber player he is so I couldn't do it.
