ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed captain Dion Phaneuf to a seven-year deal, keeping their 28-year-old defenceman around through the end of the 2020-21 season.

Phaneuf has four goals and 11 assists this season, and leads Toronto in ice time with more than 24 minutes per game.

The Leafs scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon at Michigan Stadium, where they are set to play the Detroit Red Wings on Jan. 1.
