Paveleski ties it and Couture and Marleau score in SO to lift Sharks to 5-4 win over Avalanche

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Joe Pavelski scored with just under 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game and Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau scored in the shootout to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 5-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 on Monday night.

Eric Johnson and John Mitchell scored goals 12 seconds apart in the final two minutes to put the Avalanche ahead.

Johnson's 6-on-4 power play goal slipped under Sharks' Antti Niemi's left shoulder to knot things, and Mitchell's goal also came with an extra skater as he beat Niemi to the stick side.

Pavelski tied it after taking a pass from Joe Thornton, who has an 11-game point streak against the Avalanche.

Jason Demers, Brent Burns and Matthew Irwin also scored for the Sharks.

Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog tallied for the Avalanche.

Quote of the Day

We want to make sure that whoever makes our team really makes our team by earning it and not putting them in situations where they get preference because of their status as a first-round pick or whatever it might be. That's not going to happen. Everybody has to earn their way on our team.

— Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen on the team's prospects at development camp
