Flyers' Downie gets helped off ice after hit to head
Philadelphia Flyers forward Steve Downie was helped off the ice after a hit by Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin in the second period Thursday night.

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Flyers forward Steve Downie needed help leaving the ice after a hit from Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin late in the second period of their game Thursday. He returned to take nine shifts in the third period.

Downie had the puck in the Philadelphia end when he was hit in his head by Emelin. Downie remained down on the ice while play went the other way. Downie eventually got to his feet and skated off slowly with Flyers trainer Jim McCrossin walking next to him.

Emelin was assessed a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct at 16:15 of the second.

Downie missed two weeks with a concussion sustained during a fight in a game Nov. 1 against the Washington Capitals.

The Flyers beat Montreal 2-1.
