Daily Primer Dec. 3: Stadium Series sneak peek

One of the more intense rivalries in the NHL resumes Tuesday night. It will provide a glimpse of what will certainly be an unforgettable evening at Dodger Stadium next month.

The Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks will clash at Honda Center in a preview of the Stadium Series event in Southern California, set for Jan. 25 at the home of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"Both teams are going to be ready. They are good battles," Ducks forward Teemu Selanne told the team website. "We've created a good rivalry, and that's what this area needs."

Here's a closer look at the action Tuesday:

San Jose Sharks at Toronto Maple Leafs -- The Sharks begin a four-game road trip after sweeping a five-game homestand to move into first place in the Pacific Division. San Jose moved one point ahead of the Ducks with a 4-3 shootout win against Anaheim on Saturday. Toronto returns home after going winless on a three-game road trip (0-1-2). The Maple Leafs gave up four straight goals en route to a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders -- Pittsburgh makes its first trip to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum since May, when it eliminated the Islanders in an entertaining opening-round series of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Penguins enter Tuesday with a three-game winning streak; the Islanders won four games in November and have fallen into last place in the Metropolitan Division.

Carolina Hurricanes at Washington Capitals -- Carolina begins a stretch of seven of nine games on the road with hopes of turning things around. The Hurricanes have lost six of their past eight games and have dropped from third to sixth place in the Metropolitan. Washington will be seeking its third straight win after rallying for a 3-2 overtime win against the Islanders on Saturday. It was the 10th time the Capitals had a game decided after three periods (8-0-2); they had 10 in the 48 games last season.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Columbus Blue Jackets -- Tampa Bay hopes to put an end to its four-game road skid; the Lightning have scored six goals over that span. Tampa Bay won the first two games of its three-game homestand before a 3-0 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday. Columbus was outshot 36-14 in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday. The Blue Jackets have alternated wins and losses over their past eight games and have not won two in a row in more than a month.

Ottawa Senators at Florida Panthers -- The Senators travel to the Sunshine State after dropping a 4-2 decision to the Detroit Red Wings in Daniel Alfredsson's return to Ottawa on Sunday. The Senators have won three of their past 10 games and reside in sixth place in the Atlantic Division, seven points behind fifth-place Toronto. Tuesday marks the fourth of a five-game homestand for Florida; the Panthers have been outscored 10-3 in their past two games in losses to the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh.

Dallas Stars at Chicago Blackhawks -- Dallas hopes to have forward Tyler Seguin in the lineup; the talented forward missed a 3-2 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday due to concussion symptoms. The Stars are 1-2-2 in their past five games. Chicago returns to United Center after winning six times on its seven-game road trip. The Blackhawks sit atop the Western Conference with 44 points. Patrick Kane has nine goals and 10 assists in the past 15 games. The game can be seen on NBCSN in the United States and TSN2 in Canada (8 p.m. ET).

Vancouver Canucks at Nashville Predators -- Tuesday marks the end of the Canucks' four-game road trip. Ryan Kesler scored twice to lead Vancouver to a 3-2 win against Carolina on Sunday, a solid response after a 5-2 loss to the Rangers the day before in New York. Nashville has dropped the first two games of its four-game homestand; the Predators lost 3-0 to Edmonton on Thursday before a 3-2 shootout defeat against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

Phoenix Coyotes at Edmonton Oilers -- Phoenix, 1-3-1 in its past five games, begins a four-game road trip Tuesday. The Coyotes have scored one first-period goal during their skid, while goaltender Mike Smith has allowed three goals in six consecutive games for the first time in his NHL career, which spans 286 appearances. After a horrific start, the Oilers have won five of their past seven games. They rallied twice before beating Dallas in a shootout Sunday.

Los Angeles Kings at Anaheim Ducks -- This heated rivalry resumes at Honda Center, a preview to the Stadium Series showdown at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25. Los Angeles is coming off a 3-2 win against the St. Louis Blues at Staples Center on Monday night, led by Tyler Toffoli's two goals and a 25-save performance from Ben Scrivens. The Ducks, who have three wins in their past 10 games, are hoping to have defensemen Bryan Allen and Francois Beauchemin back in the lineup.
