Olympic roster deadline moved to Jan. 7, 2014
The IIHF announced Wednesday the 25-man roster deadline for the 2014 Sochi Olympics has been moved from Dec. 31 to Jan. 7, 2014.

The International Ice Hockey Federation announced Wednesday the 25-man roster deadline for the 2014 Sochi Olympics has been moved from Dec. 31 to noon Eastern time on Jan. 7, 2014.

In addition to Russia and other European countries successfully lobbying for a later date, the new deadline affords time for injured candidates to heal (for example, Steven Stamkos' broken tibia).

In an email to the Canadian Press, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said the League and NHL Players' Association were consulted before the date change. The IIHF explained in a statement that Jan. 7 was selected to avoid a conflict with the conclusion of the world junior hockey championship Jan. 5.
