Wild goalie Backstrom leaves game after collision
Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom left the game Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs midway through the first period.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom left the game Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs midway through the first period with an apparent head injury.

With a little less than 13 minutes remaining, Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri skated into the crease and collided with Backstrom, appearing to contact the goaltender’s head with his elbow.

Backstrom lay motionless on the ice for several seconds before being tended to on the ice. He stayed in the game until 10:31 remained before being replaced by Josh Harding.

Kadri was assessed a two-minute penalty for goaltender interference.

Backstrom, making his first start since Oct. 28, made three saves before exiting the scoreless game. He missed nearly two weeks with a strained knee earlier this season.
