WHL Roundup: Bittner, Winterhawks red hot in 10-2 rout of Thunderbirds

Paul Bittner and the Portland Winterhawks just keep rolling.

Bittner had a hat trick as Portland drubbed the Seattle Thunderbirds 10-2 on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Chase De Leo had a pair of goals for the Winterhawks (16-4-2), while Nicolas Petan scored and added two assists. Captain Taylor Leier, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Brendan Leipsic and Derrick Pouliot all had a goal and an assist.

Brendan Burke made 24 saves for the win.

Justin Hickman and Shea Theodore replied for Seattle (11-8-2). Justin Myles stopped eight of 12 shots in the first 14:52 of the game. He was pulled after De Leo and Pouliot scored 28 seconds apart to give Portland a 4-0 lead.

Danny Mumaugh didn't fare much better in relief of Myles, turning aside 31 of 37 shots.

The game became undisciplined in the third period as the Thunderbirds racked up 65 minutes of penalties. The Winterhawks earned 43 minutes of penalties.

Portland went 2 for 6 on the power play and Seattle went 1 for 5 with the man advantage.

The Winterhawks are on a three-game point streak, having won two and lost 3-2 in overtime to the Victoria Royals on Nov. 9. Portland's won eight of its last 10 games and is in first in the WHL's Western Conference.

HURRICANES 5 WARRIORS 3

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Axel Blomqvist had a hat trick as Lethbridge dispatched the Warriors 5-3.

Russell Maxwell and Jamal Watson also scored for the Hurricanes (3-17-3), while Christopher Tai made 36 for the win.

Josh Uhrich, Jesse Forsberg and Travis Brown replied for Moose Jaw (7-13-4). Justin Paulic stopped 19 of 24 shots for the Warriors.

RAIDERS 4 BLADES 1

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Nick McBride made 28 saves to backstop the Raiders to a 4-1 victory over Saskatoon.

Matteo Gennaro, Mike Winther, Dakota Conroy and Darcy Zaharichuk supplied the offence for Prince Albert (12-8-2).

Logan Harland was the lone scorer for the Blades (9-11-3), while Alex Moodie turned aside 42 shots.

TIGERS 6 COUGARS 1

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Miles Koules struck twice — including the eventual winner — as Medicine Hat downed the Cougars 6-1.

Cole Sanford, Markus Eisenschmid, Steven Owre and Matt Staples rounded out the Tigers (14-3-3) attack. Daniel Wapple made 39 saves for Medicine Hat.

Todd Fiddler scored for Prince George (8-12-4), while Brett Zarowny stopped 33 shots.
