Subban, Canadiens begin contract talks: report
The Montreal Canadiens and impending restricted free agent defensemen P.K. Subban began preliminary discussions on a contract extension Tuesday.

The Montreal Canadiens and impending restricted free agent defensemen P.K. Subban began preliminary discussions on a contract extension Tuesday, according to reports from French-language sports networks RDS and TVA Sports.

With Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin in Toronto for the general managers meeting, Subban's agent Don Meehan reportedly was in Montreal to meet with Bergevin's staff to begin discussions on the parameters of a future contract for Subban.

Meehan also represents Canadiens defenseman Raphael Diaz, a potential unrestricted free agent, and discussions reportedly also began for his contract extension Tuesday.

Subban, 24, entered NHL games Tuesday with three goals and 14 assists in 18 games. His 17 points were second among NHL defensemen, behind the 18 points of Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators.

Subban is in the final season of a two-year, $5.75 million contract he signed last season. That contract was signed after Subban missed the first five games while the negotiations were completed, and he sat out one more game before entering the lineup Feb. 2 against the Buffalo Sabres.

Quote of the Day

It's such a privilege to be one of these 80 great players to do this milestone, and it doesn't get better than this doing it where I started. It means a lot to me. A big thanks goes to all the players tonight who helped me to achieve that and also all the players through my career.
