WHL Roundup: Wong with five points as the Hurricanes down the Blades

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - Tyler Wong scored his first-career hat trick and added two assists as the Lethbridge Hurricanes downed the visiting Saskatoon Blades 8-5 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

Josh Derko scored twice for the Hurricanes (2-9-1), Russell Maxwell had a goal and two assists while Macoy Erkamps and Ryan Pilon each scored once.

Graeme Craig scored once and set up three more for the Blades (6-6-2), Nikita Scherbak had a pair of goals and Nick Gomerich and Brett Stovin scored the others.

Lethbridge's Corbin Boes made 39 saves for the win. Alex Moodie stopped 18-of-22 shots in a losing cause. Moodie replaced Saskatoon starter Troy Trombley, who allowed three goals on 10 shots in 20 minutes of action.

The Hurricanes went 3 for 5 on the power play while the Blades scored three times on five chances with the man advantage.

WHEAT KINGS 6 TIGERS 3

BRANDON, Man. — Curtis Honey stopped 43 shots as the Wheat Kings doubled up Medicine Hat.

John Quenneville scored once and set up two more for Brandon (7-5-0) while Ryan Pulock, Jayce Hawryluk, Rihards Bukarts, Richard Nejezchleb and Braylon Shmyr had the others.

Hunter Shinkaruk, Markus Eisenschmid and Jacob Doty supplied the scoring for the Tigers (7-2-2).

Medicine Hat's Daniel Wapple made 30 saves in defeat.

ICE 4 OIL KINGS 3

EDMONTON — Hudson Elynuik scored the eventual winner late in the third as Kootenay edged the Oil Kings.

Collin Shirley, Jaedon Descheneau and Levi Cable also scored for the Ice (6-5-1) while Luke Philp chipped in with two assists.

Mitchell Moroz, Curtis Lazar and Henrik Samuelsson scored for Edmonton (5-6-1).

Kootenay's Mackenzie Skapski made 28 saves for the win as Tyler Santos stopped 28 shots for the Oil Kings.

PATS 4 WARRIORS 2

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Dawson MacAuley stopped 37 shots as Regina jumped out to a four-goal lead en route to defeating the Warriors.

Marc McCoy, Morgan Klimchuk, Dyson Stevenson and Connor Gay scored for the Pats (7-5-0) while Boston Leier had two assists.

Colton McCarthy and Brayden Point scored for Moose Jaw (4-6-3).

Justin Paulic made 28 saves for the Warriors.

HITMEN 5 REBELS 2

RED DEER, Alta. — Elliott Peterson scored twice and set up another as Calgary defeated the Rebels.

Colby Harmsworth, Jaynen Rissling and Jake Virtanen also scored for the Hitmen (7-3-1).

Red Deer (6-7-0) got goals from Connor Bleackley and Dominik Volek.

Calgary's Chris Driedger made 25 stops for the win as Rebels' netminder Patrik Bartosak turned away 41 shots in defeat.

SILVERTIPS 1 BLAZERS 0

EVERETT, Wash. — Kohl Bauml scored the game's only goal 13 seconds into the third period, lifting the Silvertips over Kamloops.

Everett's (7-2-2) Austin Lotz stopped all 23 shots he faced for his third-career shutout.

Blazers' (6-6-2) defenceman Ryan Rehill was ejected in the second period after picking up a five-minute major for interference.

Taran Kozun made 37 saves for Kamloops.

ROCKETS 3 COUGARS 2

KELOWNA, B.C. — Tyrell Goulbourne and Damon Severson scored 59 seconds apart in the second period as the Rockets slipped past Prince George.

Tyson Baillie also scored for Kelowna (6-1-2).

Chase Witala and Carson Bolduc scored for the Cougars (6-7-1).

Rockets' goaltender Jordon Cooke made 21 saves while Ty Edmonds stopped 33 shots for Prince George.

THUNDERBIRDS 6 BRONCOS 3

KENT, Wash. — Roberts Lipsbergs and Riley Sheen each had a goal and an assist to lead Seattle over Swift Current.

Justin Hickman, Brandon Troock, Seth Swenson and Jared Hauf also scored for the Thunderbirds (9-3-1) and Shea Theodore had two assists.

Julius Honka, Colby Cave and Codo Gordon recorded goals for the Broncos (6-6-1).

Justin Myles made 25 saves for Seattle as Swift Current's netminder Landon Bow turned away 37 shots.

ROYALS 4 CHIEFS 1

SPOKANE, Wash. — Coleman Vollrath made 41 saves and Ben Walker scored the eventual winner as Victoria downed the Chiefs.

Tyler Soy, Logan Fisher and Brandon Fushimi also scored for the Royals (9-6-0) while Austin Carroll tacked on two assists.

Mike Aviani scored Spokane's (10-3-0) lone goal.

Garret Hughson made 24 saves for the Chiefs.

WINTERHAWKS 8 AMERICANS 1

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Nicolas Petan and Boston Leier had a goal and two assists each as Portland crushed Tri-City.

Chase De Leo scored twice for the Winterhawks (7-3-1) and Paul Bittner, Presten Kopeck, Keegan Iverson and Oliver Bjorkstrand had the others.

Jessey Astles scored for the Americans (5-8-1).

Portland's Brendan Burke made 28 saves for the win. Tri-City's Eric Comrie took the loss after allowing five goals on 27 shots through two periods. Evan Sarthou started the third for the Americans and stopped 7-of-10 shots in relief.
