Penguins' James Neal leaves with injury
James Neal left the Pittsburgh Penguins' season-opener against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night in the first period with an injury.

James Neal left the Pittsburgh Penguins' season-opener against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night in the first period with an injury. He saw 3:49 of ice time in the opening period before heading to the dressing room and was not on the bench for the second period. The team said he will not return.

Beau Bennett took Neal's place on a line with Jussi Jokinen and Evgeni Malkin. Pittsburgh won the game 3-0.

Neal was questionable entering the game after leaving practice early on Wednesday with what the team called an upper-body injury. He did not take part in the morning skate Thursday.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.

— Bryan Trottier on making his return to coaching as an assistant with the Sabres
