Hurricanes call up defenseman Ryan Murphy
The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled defenseman Ryan Murphy from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.

The Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday recalled defenseman Ryan Murphy from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.

The Hurricanes had sent Murphy to Charlotte on Monday.

Murphy, Carolina's first-round pick (No. 12) in the 2011 NHL Draft, is expected to practice with the team on Wednesday. The Hurricanes open their regular season Friday night at home against the Detroit Red Wings.

Murphy is entering his first full professional season after four years with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League. He was scoreless in four games with Carolina last season.

Quote of the Day

I don't think it's really truly going to sink in until we drop the puck, to be honest. I know there's going to be a lot of smoke and mirrors with the media attention and all that. We came [Monday] and it was sort of a light day to get things organized. We just want to focus in on the business aspect, the game itself. That's what we're preparing to do. Get these next couple of days out of the way and it's game on.
