Murphy, Carolina's first-round pick (No. 12) in the 2011 NHL Draft, is expected to practice with the team on Wednesday. The Hurricanes open their regular season Friday night at home against the Detroit Red Wings.
Murphy is entering his first full professional season after four years with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League. He was scoreless in four games with Carolina last season.
