Columbus Blue Jackets pare roster by sending 8 to Springfield of American Hockey League

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Columbus Blue Jackets assigned eight players Saturday to their American Hockey League affiliate in Springfield, Mass.

They are forwards Michael Chaput, Ryan Craig and Jack Skille, defencemen Cody Goloubef, Ilari Melart and Will Weber, and goaltenders Mike McKenna and Jeremy Smith.

Craig, Goloubef, Skille, McKenna and Smith have all been placed on waivers for the purpose of being assigned to the AHL.

The Blue Jackets open their season Friday night at home against Calgary.

Quote of the Day

He's only 17 but he can see the ice so well and he moves the puck and goes to the open ice all the time, so I just think he's a player that is ready to play in the NHL. I'm really looking forward to coaching someone like this.

— U.S. National Junior Team coach Ron Wilson on Auston Matthews, the projected No. 1 pick of the 2016 NHL Draft
