Roundup: Sislo, Schneider lead Devils past Flyers

Mike Sislo scored what proved to be the game-winner at 7:34 of the third period and Cory Schneider made 22 saves in the New Jersey Devils' 2-1 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday night.

Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky opened the scoring at 6:37 of the first period, dancing around Flyers defenseman Erik Gustafsson and evading goalie Ray Emery before backhanding the puck in from behind the goal line. Sislo scored a similar goal when he beat Andrej Meszaros and beat Emery low on his stick side.

The Flyers got within 2-1 when defenseman Kimmo Timonen scored on the power play at 18:29 of the third period, ending Schneider's preseason scoreless streak at 158:22.

"What do you say?" Devils coach Pete DeBoer asked. "Just solid, confident and he gives our team that feeling when he's in there."

Schneider, who shut out the New York Islanders 3-0 on Saturday night, said he got plenty of help.

"I thought our team did a great job blocking shots," he said. "Some of the guys were blocking shots like it was April. It was great to see."

Emery made 17 saves for Philadelphia, which had captain Claude Giroux in the lineup for the first time in the preseason after he had finger surgery on Aug. 15 following a fluke accident while playing golf. He played 22:04, won nine of 11 faceoffs and assisted on Timonen's goal.

"As the game went on, it felt better," Giroux said.

Flyers forward Jakub Voracek left the game with an upper-body injury and did not return. Voracek was hooked by Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador on a second-period breakaway, and his lower back collided with the post. He was awarded a penalty shot, but slid the puck wide against Schneider and left for the dressing room shortly afterward. Vincent Lecavalier took Voracek's spot on the first line. The Flyers said after the game that the injury was not serious and that he will be evaluated on Wednesday.

Voracek led the Flyers last season with 22 goals and 46 points in 48 games.

Ottawa Senators 3, Toronto Maple Leafs 2: Colin Greening scored the winner at 8:43 of the third period to lift Ottawa past Toronto at Air Canada Centre.

Zach Smith and Jim O'Brien scored for the Senators, who did not dress Jason Spezza, Bobby Ryan and Erik Karlsson in the first of three games in three nights. Robin Lehner made 26 saves.

James van Riemsdyk and Dion Phaneuf scored for Toronto in a game tied 1-1 going into the final period. The Leafs almost tied it up in the dying seconds with a wild flurry and goalie James Reimer on the bench.

"Last year, Toronto had us beat most of the games, and it's a rivalry, so it's always nice to beat them," Lehner said.

Reimer, who's battling Jonathan Bernier for the starting job, made 34 saves.

"I was the starter here last year and I had no intention of giving up whether they brought in Bernier or Lundqvist or someone who'd never played an NHL game before," Reimer said.

Said coach Randy Carlyle: "He made big-league stops, played very well."

Nashville Predators 2, Tampa Bay Lightning 1: Simon Moser and Kevin Klein scored and Pekka Rinne made 14 saves to lead Nashville past Tampa Bay at Bridgestone Arena.

Rinne, recovering from offseason hip surgery, played the opening two periods before being relieved by Marek Mazanec, who gave up a goal on three shots he faced in the third period. It was the second consecutive game that Rinne played two periods and did not allow a goal.

Steven Stamkos had the lone goal for the Lightning at 19:14 of the third period.

Moser, a Swiss native on a professional tryout agreement with the Predators, scored off a pass from Rich Clune at 4:48 of the second. Klein made it 2-0 with 5:13 remaining in the third.

Anders Lindback, Rinne's backup in Nashville for two seasons before being traded to Tampa Bay in June 2012, had 31 saves.

"It was fun to play against Lindy," Rinne said. "It was good to see him play extremely well, but we still got the win.

"Lindback saw a lot of action, but I think he played pretty under control," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "He made the saves and that’s what you want in your goaltender, to make all the saves you can. You can’t expect Lindback to keep making all the saves, but he was under control and played the puck well. I thought he was exceptional. Plus, he’s coming into a town that he used to play in, so there’s that added pressure and he responded."

Edmonton Oilers 5, New York Rangers 3: Jordan Eberle had a goal and two assists and David Perron scored twice as Edmonton won its fourth consecutive preseason game with a victory against the Rangers at Rexall Place.

Taylor Hall and Ben Eager also scored for the Oilers, who improved to 5-1-1 in the preseason.

"It's fun to have a lot of success right now, but hopefully we can carry it over to the regular season," said Perron, who was acquired from the St. Louis Blues during the summer.

Marc Staal, Dan Girardi and J.T. Miller scored for the Rangers, who also lost at Calgary on Monday.

The Oilers are off until Friday, when they’ll face the Dallas Stars in Oklahoma City, the home of their top farm team. The Rangers continue their western Canadian preseason trip at Vancouver on Thursday -- and they might do it with a smaller roster.

"I thought we carried the play for a good part of the night," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "I'm liking a lot of the things I'm seeing, but at the same time, when you watch the games, some players are falling behind as far as the pace and the step of the NHL. There is a chance we might decide to accelerate the process of getting down on [roster] numbers."

Dallas Stars 5, Colorado Avalanche 3: Colton Sceviour and Jamie Benn each scored twice in the second period and Sceviour completed a hat trick late in the third, helping Dallas beat Colorado at Pepsi Center.

Sceviour's second goal at 9:44 gave the Stars a 4-0 lead and prompted Colorado coach Patrick Roy to pull goalie Jean-Sebastian Giguere in favor of Sami Aittokallio.

Gabriel Landeskog answered for Colorado with 2:11 left in the second period, and Brad Malone and Paul Stastny followed with goals in the third period to get the Avalanche within 4-3.

Sceviour added an empty-net goal with 1:40 left in the game. Kari Lehtonen stopped 26 shots for the Stars.

Giguere made six saves and Aittokallio stopped all 15 shots he faced.

"We had a really good start, but unfortunately for us, coming [in the first intermission] at 0-0 was probably the killer," Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said, "but overall the guys played really well in that first period. We saw a lot of good things out there. We kept [Dallas] to one shot on goal in the first [period], and I thought that was great."

San Jose Sharks 5, Vancouver Canucks 0: Tomas Hertl scored twice, Joe Thornton had a goal and two assists and Antti Niemi stopped all 24 shots he faced as San Jose blanked Vancouver at SAP Center.

Dan Boyle and Logan Couture also scored to keep the Sharks unbeaten in five preseason games.

Eddie Lack stopped 28 shots for the Canucks, who lost their second straight on the road.

Hertl opened the scoring at 10:37 of the first period, redirecting a shot by Scott Hannan. Boyle's goal came two minutes later. Thornton scored at 11:21 of the second period directly after Couture won a faceoff during a power play. Couture added a power-play goal with a minute left in the period.

Hertl, who has a team-leading three goals in the preseason, scored his second goal at 2:25 of the third.
