Roundup: Maple Leafs win 1-goal, 15-round shootout

Toronto Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer made 38 saves then went 15-for-15 in the shootout for a 3-2 preseason win against the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center.

Jay McClement, on the 30th attempt, scored the only shootout goal after he had tied the game with 4:37 left in the third period.

"At one point I think both refs were just going to call it a draw and kind of pick up the puck and go home and be old-school NHL there for a second and call it a tie," Sabres forward Steve Ott said, according to The Canadian Press. "But both performances by both goalies in the shootout was pretty spectacular to watch. I've never seen that before."

Jhonas Enroth made 32 saves for the Sabres before stopping the first 14 shootout attempts he faced. Paul Ranger, in the 10th round, tried a kick-shot to beat Enroth, which upset the goaltender at the time.

"My first reaction was that he tried to embarrass me there a little bit, but when I look at it now, it's good [the] guy's trying to be creative, I guess," Enroth said.

Toronto's Jamie Devane scored a third-period goal for the Maple Leafs, who trailed 2-0. Buffalo defenseman Mark Pysyk had a goal and an assist, and Marcus Foligno scored for the Sabres.

Reimer's final save in game action was on a Jamie McBain breakaway right before the overtime buzzer. The goalie was 0-5 in shootouts last season.

"It's good to get out there and for me to stop some pucks and for guys to get some reps, but it's exhibition and it's a little looser," Reimer said. "I think it's a little different when it's during a game and two points are on the line."

The longest regular-season shootout is 15 rounds between the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals, won by a goal, the seventh of that tiebreaker, from New York's Marek Malik on Nov. 26, 2005.

New Jersey Devils 3, New York Islanders 0: Cory Schneider remained perfect this preseason, making 26 saves in the first NHL game played at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Schneider has stopped all 48 shots he has faced in two preseason games.

"It's unfortunate these wins don't count," he told the Devils website. "It's not as much about the result right now, it's more about just how guys are feeling. I felt good tonight, improved in some areas from last game. But again, still a few times where I was kicking out some bad rebounds, pucks that I should be eating up and it led to some more chances and shots. It's always kind of a fluid situation, but the process seems to be going pretty well right now."

Jacob Josefson scored the first goal in the arena's history, and Patrik Elias and Steve Bernier added one each for the Devils, who were the visiting team.

Josefson was able to poke a loose puck past Evgeni Nabokov 10:14 into the game after the Islanders goaltender was unable to control Anton Volchenkov's shot from the point.

Elias doubled New Jersey's lead at 4:49 of the second period. After a feed from Josefson, Elias converted a wrist shot from the left circle past Nabokov to make it 2-0. Bernier completed the scoring with a power-play goal 2:31 into the third period. Damien Brunner had an assist for New Jersey.

Tampa Bay Lightning 5, Florida Panthers 4 (SO): Florida's Bobby Butler scored twice in the third period, with the tying goal at 58 seconds left, but Tampa Bay rookie Jonathan Drouin scored the only goal in the shootout at Tampa Bay Times Forum.

"I was pretty happy and I was a little nervous, all the fans were screaming," Drouin told the team's website. "When I scored, I was pretty happy."

Steven Stamkos gave Tampa Bay a 4-3 lead with 7:25 remaining in regulation, and had two first-period assists to help the Lightning to a 2-0 edge.

Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov had a goal and two assists, defenseman Erik Gudbranson had a goal and an assist, and Tomas Kopecky had two assists.

Ryan Malone, Martin St. Louis and J.T. Brown scored for Tampa Bay.

"In close games you learn to win, and I think we made a lot of right decisions tonight to put ourselves in a spot where we ended up finishing," Malone said.

Carolina Hurricanes 3, Montreal Canadiens 1: Carolina's 5-foot-5 forward Nathan Gerbe got into a fight and scored a power-play goal at Bell Centre.

Gerbe fought 5-foot-9 Brendan Gallagher in the first period before Drayson Bowman and Jeff Skinner scored for the Hurricanes. Gerbe got his goal with 2:21 remaining in the second period to make it 3-0.

Eric Staal had two assists. A shot by Montreal's Andrei Markov bounced off teammate Michael Bournival with 8:02 remaining to spoil the shutout for Anton Khudobin, who made 40 saves.

"We did this result all together as a team," Khudobin said, according to The Canadian Press. "But that many shots and one goal is pretty good too."

Montreal defeated Carolina 6-0 Friday in Quebec. This was the fourth game in four nights for the Hurricanes.

St. Louis Blues 3, Dallas Stars 2 (OT): Patrik Berglund scored 2:07 into overtime at Scottrade Center. Alex Pietrangelo scored a power-play goal for St. Louis with 4:41 remaining in the third period to tie the game.

Tyler Seguin had two assists, on goals by Alex Chiasson and Jamie Benn, for Dallas. Kari Lehtonen made 33 saves.

Jaden Schwartz had a first-period goal for the Blues, who lost 4-3 at home to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday. Dallas had defeated the Florida Panthers 4-1.

Minnesota Wild 4, Winnipeg Jets 3 (SO): Wild defenseman Ryan Suter, making his 2013 preseason debut, scored with 8:19 remaining in the third period, and Jason Pominville had the only shootout goal at Xcel Energy Center.

With Suter, Pominville, Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise in the lineup, Carson McMillan and Charlie Coyle scored first-period goals to give the Wild a 2-0 lead.

The Jets took a 3-2 lead on second-period goals by Eric O'Dell, Patrice Cormier and Paul Postma.

Parise and Koivu assisted on Suter's goal.

"As the game goes on and we need a goal, who goes out there and gets it for us? That line," Wild coach Mike Yeo told the team's website.

Nicklas Backstrom stopped 28 shots through overtime, then three shootout attempts.

Boston Bruins 2, Detroit Red Wings 0: Carl Soderberg scored twice, and Chad Johnson made 18 saves for Boston at Joe Louis Arena.

Soderberg's goals came in 1:45 spanning the second and third periods. He got his first with 1:04 remaining in the second then added the other 41 seconds into the third.

Patrice Bergeron made his preseason debut for the Bruins, recovered from injuries he sustained during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"Felt pretty good and feeling good now too, so good to get that first one out of the way and now I can move forward," Bergeron said, according to the team's website.

The Red Wings played without Daniel Alfredsson, Pavel Datsyuk, Niklas Kronwall and Henrik Zetterberg.

Edmonton Oilers 5, Vancouver Canucks 2: Five Oilers scored, including Ryan Smyth, Nail Yakupov and Will Acton in the third period at Rexall Place.

Those followed special-teams goals by Sam Gagner (power play) and David Perron (shorthanded) that gave Edmonton a 2-1 lead after two periods.

The Oilers went 1-for-8 on the power play and got 31 shots through against Canucks backup goalie Eddie Lack.

Mike Santorelli and Jannik Hansen scored for Vancouver, 0-3-0 under new coach John Tortorella. The Canucks lost to the Oilers 4-1 Wednesday.

Gagner and Vancouver forwards Jordan Schroeder and Nicklas Jensen each left the game with an injury.

San Jose Sharks 3, Phoenix Coyotes 2: All five goals came on the power play, capped by Logan Couture's 3:28 into overtime at SAP Center at San Jose.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Andy Miele scored for Phoenix, which was 2-for-4; Freddie Hamilton and Jason Demers had extra-man goals for San Jose, which was 3-for-6.

Mike Smith made 23 saves for the Coyotes; Harri Sateri had 24 for the Sharks.

Columbus Blue Jackets 5, Pittsburgh Penguins 3: Penguins forward Jussi Jokinen scored a natural hat trick in the second period, but Boone Jenner's second goal of the game helped the Blue Jackets win at Consol Energy Center.

After the Penguins fell behind 3-0, Jokinen scored three times in 8:28 of the second period to tie the game. Jenner's goal 7:21 into the third period put Columbus ahead 4-3.

The teams' starting goaltenders -- Sergei Bobrovsky for Columbus and Marc-Andre Fleury for Pittsburgh -- each played the full game. Bobrovsky made 38 saves; Fleury stopped 19 shots.

The Penguins announced after the game that goalie Tomas Vokoun underwent a procedure to dissolve a blood clot Saturday and is out indefinitely.
