Capitals sign Johansson to two-year contract
The Washington Capitals on Saturday re-signed restricted free-agent center Marcus Johansson to a two-year, $4 million contract.

The Washington Capitals on Saturday re-signed restricted free-agent center Marcus Johansson to a two-year, $4 million contract. Johansson will make $1.825 million this season and $2.175 million in 2014-15, for an average annual value of $2 million.

"It's best when guys don't miss too much time, so I'm happy about that," Capitals coach Adam Oates said at the team's rookie camp. "You want to start the year correct. Sometimes these things happen. I'm glad we just got it done."

Johansson, 22, had six goals and 16 assists in 34 games last season. He had two points in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games.

His best stretch of the season came in the second half, when he had 20 points in his last 22 games of the regular season. Much of that time was spent on Washington's top line alongside Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.

"I think when he went there, we all started playing better and [Marcus] was a part of that. We had a little chemistry," Oates said. "We were all playing better hockey at that time and he was a part of it. Hopefully we can continue to grow and everyone keeps getting better."

Taken by the Capitals with the 24th pick of the 2009 NHL Draft, Johansson has 33 goals and 62 assists in 183 games.
