Capitals sign 2013 top pick Burakovsky

Wednesday, 09.04.2013 / 11:19 AM / News

The Washington Capitals on Wednesday signed 2013 first-round pick Andre Burakovsky to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Burakovsky, taken with the No. 23 pick in June, had 11 points in 43 games with Malmo in Sweden's second division last season. He also had four goals in five games for Sweden at the 2013 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.

The 18-year-old forward will play for the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League this season. He also will have a chance to play for Sweden at the 2014 World Junior Championship; he had team-highs of three goals and five points in five games for Sweden at national junior development camp last month in Lake Placid, N.Y.

For me, it's a great win for our hockey team and for a lot of people back in Columbus, especially our fans in particular … people who have been devoted to this organization, it's big.
