Steve Begin, who played 36 games with the Calgary Flames last season, signed a one-year contract Wednesday with the Abbotsford Heat, the Flames' American Hockey League team. Financial terms were not released.
Begin, 35, earned a contract with the Flames as a non-roster invitee to training camp, then had four goals, four assists and a minus-2 rating in 36 games last season. He was the team's nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which goes to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
Chosen by the Flames in the second round (No. 40) of the 1996 NHL Draft, Begin has 56 goals and 108 points in 524 NHL games with the Flames, Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators.
The Flames also announced left wing Carter Bancks, who played two games with the team last season, signed a one-year contract with Abbotsford. Financial terms were not released.
Bancks, 24, had five goals and seven assists in 59 AHL games with Abbotsford.
