Florida Panthers sign Jacob Markstrom to two-year deal

The Florida Panthers on Monday signed restricted free-agent goaltender Jacob Markstrom to a new two-year contract. Terms of the deal were not released.

A 2008 second-round pick, Markstrom went 8-14-1 in 23 games last season, with a 3.22 goals-against average and .901 save percentage. It was Markstrom's most extensive NHL time, after seeing action in eight games the previous two seasons.

With Jose Theodore an unrestricted free agent, Markstrom will share the net with veteran Scott Clemmensen this season.

Markstrom, 23, was the second young player to sign with the Panthers on Monday. Earlier, the team signed 2013 first-round pick Aleksander Barkov to a three-year, entry-level contract. The expectation is for the Panthers to be a far younger team this season, with Markstrom and Barkov playing big roles as part of that group.

"We're going to go with our young guys," Tallon said during the team's recent rookie camp. "That's been the plan all along and that's the way we're going to go."

Quote of the Day

I don't think it's really truly going to sink in until we drop the puck, to be honest. I know there's going to be a lot of smoke and mirrors with the media attention and all that. We came [Monday] and it was sort of a light day to get things organized. We just want to focus in on the business aspect, the game itself. That's what we're preparing to do. Get these next couple of days out of the way and it's game on.
