Ron Hextall leaves Kings, returns to Flyers as assistant general manager

PHILADELPHIA - Ron Hextall is back with the Philadelphia Flyers, joining a long list of former players in the front office.

Hextall on Monday was named assistant general manager and director of hockey operations, leaving the Los Angeles Kings. The former goaltender was vice president and assistant general manager in Los Angeles.

Hextall joins former Flyers players in management, including GM Paul Holmgren and senior vice president Bobby Clarke.

"We are very pleased to welcome back Ron Hextall to our management team,” Holmgren said in a statement. “Ron has a wealth of experience in the front office in various capacities which will be a valuable addition to our staff.”

Hextall spent the previous seven seasons with the Kings. Before that he was director of pro hockey personnel and a scout for the Flyers, who are known for giving former players positions in the organization.

During his playing career, Hextall spent 11 of 13 seasons with the Flyers. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1986 when Philadelphia lost to the Edmonton Oilers and was part of the team that reached the Stanley Cup final in 1996 before losing to the Detroit Red Wings.
