Pietrangelo, seven other Blues get qualifying offer
St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was one of eight players to receive a qualifying offer from the club, it was announced Tuesday.

St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was one of eight players to receive a qualifying offer from the club, it was announced Tuesday.

Pietrangelo, set to become a restricted free agent Friday, was the Blues’ first-round pick (No. 4) at the 2008 NHL Draft. The 23-year-old had five goals, 19 assists and an even rating in 47 games during the 2012-13 season.

Chris Stewart was the Blues’ leading scorer in 2012-13. The 25-year-old right wing had 18 goals, 18 assists and 40 penalty minutes. Six of his goals were scored on the power play.

Also receiving qualifying offers from the Blues were goaltender Jake Allen; forwards Evgeny Grachev, Philip McRae and Tyler Shattock; and defensemen Kris Russell and Cade Fairchild.

The offers will allow the Blues to retain the negotiating rights for each player when free agency begins Friday.

Quote of the Day

You don't see many. The [Drew] Doughtys, the [P.K.] Subbans, those are guys that create offense from the back and then on top of that ability, the size that he has. In the West you play against some pretty big players, and being able to clear the crease and contain the [Ryan] Getzlafs and the [Corey] Perrys and [Anze] Kopitars and players like that, we're excited about him going back there.
