DALLAS - The Dallas Stars have signed defenceman Sergei Gonchar to a two-year deal worth US$10 million.
The Senators traded the 39-year-old's rights to Dallas for a sixth-round pick that was conditional on Gonchar agreeing to a contract with the Stars. Ottawa now has seven selections in this year's draft.
Gonchar gives the Stars have another veteran presence on their young blue-line to go along with 36-year-old alternate captain Stephane Robidas.
Gonchar is a veteran of 1,177 NHL games and has 217 goals and 558 assists. He had three goals and 24 assists last season.
"Sergei is a high-end offensive defenceman who can quarterback a power play and help generate offence from the blue line," Stars general manager Jim Nill said in a statement. "Sergei has had an impressive NHL career and has been a big contributor to Ottawa's offence over the last three seasons. We are excited to see him continue his career here in Dallas the next two years."
The Stars are Gonchar's fifth NHL team. He spent the past three years with Ottawa.
