The 2013 NHL Draft marks the 50th anniversary of the first amateur selection process, which was held June 5, 1963 in Montreal.

Since then, when the six NHL teams each made a first-round pick, the League has grown to 30 teams, and when the 2013 NHL Draft is held June 30 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., 30 more players will be able to call themselves first-round NHL draft picks.

But who are the best first-round picks of all time? It's an interesting question sure to stoke debate, and the NHL.com offices are no different.

We assembled a panel of experts to rate the best first-round pick at each selection spot in the order to create the NHL.com Dream Draft.

So who is the best No. 1 pick ever? Is it Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux, the first pick of the 1984 draft? What about fellow Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur, selected by the Montreal Canadiens with the first pick of the 1971 draft? Or will a younger group look at current Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, the first player picked in 2005?

What about at No. 2? Is Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne the best player taken at that spot? What about a pair of future Hall of Fame members, Brendan Shanahan and Chris Pronger?

NHL.com unveiled the first member of the Dream Draft on June 1, with the best No. 30 first-round pick. We'll feature a new player every day until we unveil the best No. 1 pick on June 30, the day of the 2013 draft.

You'll be able to follow along each day at NHL.com and offer your opinion with interactive polls and via social media. Let our experts know what you think of their selections.

Quote of the Day

I downplayed the first one because I thought it's just a hockey game. We just want to win the game; it's against our rival and we want the two points. I downplayed it, but now having gone through the first one I look back and say, 'Geez, that was really cool.' I think as I've grown a bit older I've got a lot more appreciation for what we're allowed to do every day.
