Ovechkin played with hairline fracture in foot
Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin played with hairline fracture in foot.

The Washington Capitals confirmed Thursday that captain Alex Ovechkin played the final two games of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the New York Rangers with a hairline fracture in his left foot.

The injury occurred in the first period of Game 6, when Ovechkin blocked a pair of shots by Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh.

Despite the injury, Ovechkin traveled to Helsinki, Finland to play for Russia at the 2013 IIHF World Championship on Thursday. Ovechkin had a goal and an assist in an 8-3 loss to the United States in the quarterfinals.

According to a Washington Post source, the injury requires rest to heal and wasn't going to be aggravated by Ovechkin continuing to play.

Ovechkin was limited to one goal and one assist in seven games against the Rangers, including no points over the final five games of the series.
