Keenan signs on to coach KHL team
Mike Keenan announced via his Twitter account Monday that he has signed a contract to coach Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League.

Mike Keenan, 63, announced via his Twitter account Monday that he has signed a contract to coach Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League.

The two-year contract also was announced by Metallurg on the team website.

Keenan spent 20 years in the National Hockey League as the coach of seven different teams, winning a Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994. He most recently coached the Calgary Flames for two seasons, from 2007 to 2009.

He recorded his 600th career win with the Flames, but was fired with a year left on his contract after the Flames lost in the first round of playoffs for a second straight year. Keenan is 672-531-183 in the NHL, and won the Jack Adams Award as the League's best coach during the 1984-85 season with the Philadelphia Flyers, his first as an NHL coach.

Keenan also has spent time coaching the Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers.

Keenan replaces former Carolina Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice, who was the Metallurg coach in 2012-13.

Keenan also has worked as an analyst for the New York Rangers on MSG Network and as a hockey analyst for NBC Sports Network.

Quote of the Day

I watched many times this year the series between the Russians and Canada in 1972, and he was a dominating player there. After I watched the tapes, I respect him a lot more because he turned the series around. He was the guy. In that time, he was the best in the world. It’s a big honor for me to tie him.
