Switzerland continued its shocking opening run at the 2013 IIHF World hockey Championship on Sunday, handing Canada a 3-2 shootout loss in Stockholm.
Switzerland has only beaten Canada at the Worlds twice, but both have come in the past four years. In 2010, the Swiss took a shocking 4-1 decision from the Canadians.
Denis Hollenstein and Nino Niederreiter, property of the New York Islanders, scored in regulation for Switzerland. Winnipeg Jets forward Andrew Ladd and Matt Read of the Philadelphia Flyers scored for Canada
Smith made 26 saves and denied six of eight shootout attempts in his debut for Canada at the Worlds. Gerber stopped seven of eight in the shootout and 19 shots in the game. Gerber, who played for five different teams, won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006.
The United States, meanwhile, defeated Latvia 4-1 on Sunday.
After Latvia's Arturs Kulda scored the game-opening goal in the second minute of the second period, the Americans ran off four straight goals.
In other games, France beat Austria, 3-1, Norway edged Denmark, 3-2, and Belarus nipped Slovakia, 4-3.
