Nieuwendyk out as Stars general manager
The Dallas Stars reportedly will replace Joe Nieuwendyk as general manager with Detroit Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill.

The Dallas Stars have fired general manager Joe Nieuwendyk, the team announced Sunday.

The Stars were assured of missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a fifth consecutive season when they lost 3-1 at home to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.

"Joe Niewendyk has represented the Dallas Stars extremely well as the club's general manager and has helped put pieces in place that will once again turn this team into a contender," Stars owner Tom Gaglardi said in a statment. "I would like to thank Joe for his contributions to this hockey club and wish him and his family only the best in the future."

Nieuwendyk, a Hockey Hall of Fame inductee as a player, was named GM of the Stars in May 2009. As a player, he was a member of the 1999 team that won the only Stanley Cup in franchise history.

The Stars also announced a new GM would be named at a press conference on Monday. TSN reported Saturday night that Nieuwendyk would be fired and replaced by Detroit Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill.

Nill, 55, has spent 15 years as assistant GM in Detroit and 19 years overall with the Red Wings front office. He directs Detroit's amateur scouting department and oversees the selections made at the NHL Draft.

Quote of the Day

(The tribute) was great, brought back a lot of memories. I felt I wanted to give them the thank you they deserved. I understand the booing and it was expected. They are great fans.
