The Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday signed defenseman Mathieu Roy to an NHL contract for the remaining games of the 2012-13 season.

The 6-foot-2, 214-pound player appeared in 51 games with the Hamburg Freezers of the German Elite League this season, recording eight goals, 26 points and a plus-10 rating. He led all Freezers defensemen for goals and was tied for the lead for points. He also played in six playoff games, recording five assists, tied for most on the team during the postseason.

Roy, a seventh-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2003 NHL Draft, has played in 65 NHL games with the Lightning, Columbus Blue Jackets and Oilers, amassing two goals and 13 points. Roy played in four games with Tampa Bay during the 2010-11 season, also playing in 45 games with the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League under current Lightning coach Jon Cooper.

Quote of the Day

I kept refreshing the page on the NHL website after the second round and I was shocked he lasted that long. I'm sure the Coyotes were pretty happy to get him. He's such a good player and he plays big in big games.
