Gavrus scores winner as Attack edge Whalers to even series 2-2

OWEN SOUND, Ont. - Arturs Gavrus scored the eventual winner as the Owen Sound Attack defeated the visiting Plymouth Whalers 4-3 on Wednesday in Ontario Hockey League playoff action.

Gavrus scored at 5:14 of the second period to put his club ahead 4-0 before Plymouth responded with three straight goals to make the game close.

Kurtis Gabriel and Daniel Catenacci both scored on the power play in the first period for the Attack, who evened the best-of-seven second-round match up 2-2, while Holden Cooke scored early in the second.

Connor Carrick scored a power-play goal to get the Whalers on the board and Stefan Noesen scored late in the second to make it 4-2 after 40 minutes of action.

Vincent Trocheck scored at 17:47 of the third period, bringing his club within one goal of a comeback, and chipped in two assists for a three-point outing.

Jordan Binnington made 14 saves for the win as Alex Nedeljkovic picked up the loss after giving up four goals on 19 shots. Matt Mahalak replaced Nedeljkovic in the second period ands topped all 15 shots he faced in relief.

Owen Sound went 2 for 5 on the power play while Plymouth scored once on five chances with the man advantage.

Game 5 is scheduled for Friday when the Whalers host the Attack at the Compuware Arena.
