Mayfield agrees to terms with Islanders
The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with defenseman Scott Mayfield, their second-round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft.

The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with defenseman Scott Mayfield, their second-round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft. Mayfield will join the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League on an amateur tryout contract, and his three-year, entry-level deal will take effect for the 2013-14 season.

Mayfield, 20, scored 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) and recorded 114 penalty minutes with a plus-8 rating as a sophomore at the University of Denver. The St. Louis native had seven goals, 29 points and 192 penalty minutes in 81 games during his two seasons with the Pioneers, who were eliminated from the NCAA tournament this past weekend.

Prior to his collegiate career, Mayfield played two seasons with the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League.

Mayfield is the fourth player to sign with the Islanders in the past week following the completion of his college or junior hockey season. 2011 first-round pick Ryan Strome and defenseman Andrey Pedan signed after their junior seasons ended last Friday and are playing with Bridgeport; forward Anders Lee joined the Islanders after Notre Dame was eliminated from the NCAA tournament last Saturday. Lee scored a goal on Tuesday in his NHL debut.

Quote of the Day

He stuck his neck out there for us. I don't know what's wrong with him, but you see he was in pain. But he went back in there. He's a tough guy. You've got to give him credit for helping the boys out.
