Former NHL defenseman, coach and general manager Pat Quinn has been selected to take over as the new Chairman of the Board for the Hockey Hall of Fame effective Aug. 1. Bill Hay, who has been the Hall's Chairman and CEO for 15 years, will be retiring effective July 31.
Jeff Denomme, the current President of the Hockey Hall of Fame, will add Chief Executive Officer to his title.
Hay was appointed Chairman and CEO in July 1998. He has served the Hall of Fame for 33 years, including 15 as a member of the Selection Committee (1980-95) and 18 on the Board of Directors (1995-2013).
"I have countless fond memories of my association with the Hockey Hall of Fame over the past 33 years," Hay said. "It's been an incredible honor and privilege to serve this iconic institution and to interact with the people that make it so special. With today's appointments, I am confident that the Hall will carry on the outstanding work of preserving and promoting the history of our great game."
Quinn has been a member of the Selection Committee since 1998.
"The Hockey Hall of Fame celebrates excellence in the game of hockey, and in view of this mandate I am especially proud to become Chairman of the Board," Quinn said. "Bill Hay's distinguished service is unparalleled and the manner in which his leadership has advanced the Hall's interests, along with the respect I have for the Selection Committee and the selection process, are key motivating factors to contribute at the Board level."
Quinn spent nine years as a player in the NHL. He coached the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers. He also coached Canada to the 2002 Olympic gold medal. He has 684 career coaching victories in the NHL and a .555 winning percentage with 15 playoff appearances.
Quinn served in executive roles with the Canucks and Maple Leafs.
