Bruins get veteran defenseman Redden
Veteran defenseman Wade Redden is on the move again, dealt from the St. Louis Blues to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday.

Veteran defenseman Wade Redden is on the move again, traded from the St. Louis Blues to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Redden had two goals and five points in 23 games for the Blues, but became expendable after their recent acquisitions of Jay Bouwmeester and Jordan Leopold.

Banished to the New York Rangers' American Hockey League affiliate in Connecticut for the past two seasons, Redden was bought out prior to the start of the 2012-13 season and signed with the Blues.

The No. 2 pick in the 1995 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders, Redden was traded to the Ottawa Senators where he spent the first 11 seasons of his career. He's played 1,017 games for the Senators, Rangers and Blues, posting 108 goals and 455 points.

Redden will be reunited in Boston with Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli, who spent seven seasons in Ottawa -- five as their director of legal relations and two as assistant GM, and Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara. Redden and Chara helped the Senators reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2007.

"Yes, excited for sure," Redden said of the trade. "Obviously great teammates, and Peter was obviously thought highly of when he was in Ottawa with us. He's done a great job there in Boston, too, since he's been GM. I really know what they're all about and what kind of people they are, so I'm definitely excited to be going to a team like that."

Chiarelli said, "Wade obviously played in Ottawa when I worked in Ottawa. I had to get the band back together with him and Chara. So I figured I'd do that deal. I talked to Wade and told him he'd be part of our depth here and he was excited to come here and he'll be on his way [Thursday]."

Redden turns 36 in June, so he knows this could perhaps be his last chance to win a championship. The Bruins, who won the Stanley Cup in 2011, entered Wednesday's action one point behind the Montreal Canadiens in the Northeast Division.

"I know Boston's right there, right at the top of the conference and battling with Montreal for the division lead, and Ottawa's right there too," Redden said. "I'm very familiar with all of those teams, I played in that division for a long time, so it's exciting. I know there's familiarity there that I think will be helpful for me.

"Like I said, there's some teammates that I used to play with there that it will be good to be reunited and be around that group of guys."
