Maple Leafs deal for O'Byrne but can't convince Kiprusoff to accept trade

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired defenceman Ryan O'Byrne from the Colorado Avalanche for a fourth-round pick.

The six-foot-five, 234-pound Victoria native has one goal, three assists and 54 penalty minutes in 34 games with the Avalanche this season.

He led the Avalanche in blocked shots last season with 141.

He has four goals, 33 assists and 363 penalty minutes in 300 career NHL games with Montreal and Colorado.

He was drafted in the third round, 79th overall, by Montreal in the 2003 NHL draft.

Byrne will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Quote of the Day

What we expected is what we got. Very mature young individual that's focused. He is on the right track. He's not only a great hockey individual, but he's a good person off the ice. He seemed to take a leadership role with this group right off the hop and ran away with it, and was vocal, was respectful, was everything it takes to be a Panther. His future looks bright.
