Edmonton Oilers and Washington Capitals make minor deal.

The Edmonton Oilers finalized a minor trade on Tuesday afternoon when they acquired defenseman Garrett Stafford from the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Dane Byers.

Stafford, 33, had one goal and 21 points in 48 games with Washington's American Hockey League affiliate in Hershey this season. In seven career NHL games with three teams -- the Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars and Phoenix Coyotes -- the 6-foot, 194-pound defender had two assists. He was signed as a free agent to a one-year contract with the Capitals in July 2012.

Byers, a 2004 second-round draft pick (No. 48) of the New York Rangers, spent the past season with the Oklahoma City Barons in the AHL. The 6-3, 203-pound left wing had six goals, 10 points and 144 penalty minutes in 58 matches for the Barons. He has played in 14 career NHL games with the Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets, and has one goal and 60 penalty minutes.

The Oilers signed Byers to a one-year, two-way contract last July.

Quote of the Day

I was going nuts and I saw [Subban], he was going crazy, and the ref had no idea where to go. [Subban] was skating to me, and I was skating to him and the ref was right in between us and I don't know, I kind of hit him pretty hard, I thought, but those were some emotions and I'm pretty sure he understands that.
