Jarome Iginla career timeline
NHL.com presents a timeline of Jarome Iginla's career

After weeks of speculation, the Calgary Flames made it official early Thursday when they dealt their longtime captain, Jarome Iginla, to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Iginla, who leads the Flames' franchise in career games played, goals and points, had spent his entire NHL career in Calgary since being acquired from Dallas in a trade for Joe Nieuwendyk more than 17 years ago. He led Calgary to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2004 and owns a pair of Olympic gold medals earned while playing for Team Canada.

Here's a look at the timeline of Iginla's career:

December 1995 -- The Flames acquire Iginla, a forward with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League, from Dallas in a trade for veteran center Joe Nieuwendyk. The Stars had drafted Iginla with their first-round pick (No. 11) in the 1995 NHL Draft.

April 1996 -- Iginla, still 18, plays his first game in the NHL after the Flames call him up for the playoffs against Chicago following the end of his junior team's season. He has an assist in the first game and a goal in the second.

October 1996 -- Iginla makes his regular-season debut for the Flames in their season-opener and scores Calgary's only goal in a 3-1 loss at Vancouver. He plays all 82 games in the 1996-97 season, leads all first-year players with 50 points to earn a berth on the All-Rookie team and finishes second to New York Islanders defenseman Bryan Berard in balloting for the Calder Trophy.

December 2000 -- The 100th goal of Iginla's career comes in the first period of the Flames' 7-2 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 9. He starts on the next 100 with his second of the night 1:16 later and finishes the season with career highs in goals (31) and points (71).

February 2002 -- Iginla wins a gold medal as a member of Team Canada after the Canadians defeat the United States 5-2 in the championship game at Salt Lake City.

April 2002 -- Iginla completes the best season of his career with a League-leading 52 goals and 96 points, earning him the Rocket Richard and Art Ross Trophies and a First-Team All-Star berth. He also won the Lester B. Pearson Trophy (now the Ted Lindsay Trophy) as League MVP as voted by the players and finishes second in the race for the Hart Trophy.

October 2003 -- Iginla succeeds Craig Conroy and becomes the 18th captain in Flames history -- and the first black player in NHL history to wear the "C." He remains captain until being traded.

June 2004 -- The Flames and Iginla come up one win short of the second Stanley Cup in franchise history when they lose 2-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of the Final. He leads all playoff scorers with 13 goals.

December 2006 -- Iginla reaches another milestone when he scores his 300th career goal and 600th point in a game against the Minnesota Wild.

April 2008 -- Iginla completes his second 50-goal season and finishes with a career-best 98 points, third in the NHL. He is selected as a First-Team All-Star for the second time in his career.

March 2009 -- In an 8-6 home loss to Tampa Bay on March 1, Iginla reaches a pair of milestones while recording a five-point night. He scores his 400th NHL goal and passes Theo Fleury as the franchise's all-time leader in points.

February 2010 -- Iginla passes his second milestone in a week when he takes the ice for his 1,000th NHL game. Six nights earlier, he reaches the 900-point mark for his career in a two-goal, two-assist performance against the Edmonton Oilers. He finishes the month by earning his second Olympic gold medal when Canada beats the United States 3-2 in the championship game in Vancouver

March 2011 -- A successful penalty shot against Nashville on March 6 gives Iginla his 30th goal of the season, making him only the 10th player in NHL history to score 30 or more goals in 10 consecutive seasons.

April 2011 -- Iginla joins the 1,000-point club when he scores the game-winning goal in Calgary's 3-2 win against the St. Louis Blues.

January 2012 -- The NHL's 500-goal club welcomes a new member when Iginla scores against Minnesota in a 3-1 victory on Jan. 7. He becomes the 42nd player to reach 500 regular-season goals, but just the 15th to do it with one organization.

March 2012 -- Iginla scores his 30th goal of the season in a 3-2 victory against the San Jose Sharks on March 13, becoming only the seventh player in NHL history to reach the 30-goal mark in 11 consecutive seasons.

March 2013 -- With Calgary headed for its fourth consecutive non-playoff season, the Flames trade Iginla to Pittsburgh. He finishes his career in Calgary as the franchise's all-time leader in games played (1,219), goals (525) and points (1,095).
