The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League will have a new President Cup champion after the Halifax Mooseheads eliminated the Saint John Sea Dogs with a 6-1 victory on Wednesday in post-season action.
Saint John had won the championship in both 2011 and 2012 before nearly missing the playoffs this season with a 23-44-1 regular-season record.
In a four-game first-round sweep the Mooseheads outscored the Sea Dogs 25-4, including an 11-1 defeat in Game 1 that set the tone for the series.
Stefan Fournier scored two goals and set up one more for the Mooseheads in Game 4 while Darcy Ashley had a goal and two assists.
Luca Ciampini and Matthew Boudreau each had a goal and an assist for top-ranked Halifax and Drouin chipped in with two assists. Nathan McKinnon added a single goal to round out his club's offence.
Ciampini's goal was the first playoff goal of his career in 19 games played.
Maxime Villemaire scored the lone goal for the Sea Dogs, who slid into the post season as the 16th and final seed.
Halifax's Zachary Fucale made 14 saves for the win as Saint John's Sebastien Auger stopped 44-of-50 shots in defeat.
The Mooseheads won three contests by five goals or more and averaged 50 shots per game. the Sea Dogs only had 70 combined shots in the series.
Fucale heads into the second round with a league-best .943 save percentage after stopping 66-of-70 shots.
Halifax went 2 for 3 on the power play while Saint John failed to score on its only opportunity with the man advantage.

At Saint John, N.B., the Mooseheads gave the Sea Dogs little opportunity in the first period as they outshot the host 19-1 and found themselves up 2-0.
Fournier opened the scoring at 10:33 and MacKinnon added another two minutes later, both coming on the power play.
Ciampini, Boudreau and Ashley extended Halifax's lead to five after scoring second-period goals.
Fournier made it 6-0 3:57 into the third period before Villemaire ruined Fucale's shutout bid with a goal at 7:33.
