Penguins acquire Murray from Sharks
The San Jose Sharks on Monday traded veteran stay-at-home defenseman Douglas Murray to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The San Jose Sharks on Monday traded veteran stay-at-home defenseman Douglas Murray to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In exchange for the 33-year-old Murray, San Jose will receive a second-round pick in both the 2013 and 2014 NHL Drafts. The 2014 second-round pick that San Jose acquired in the Murray deal turns into a third-round pick if Murray doesn't re-sign with the Penguins.

“We have tremendous respect for Douglas as a hockey player and a person,” said San Jose GM Doug Wilson said. “He has been a warrior for our hockey club for the past eight seasons and he has been in the Sharks family for the past 14 years. This deal places Douglas in a quality situation which he deserves.”

Murray, in his eighth season with the Sharks, has three assists and a minus-8 rating in 29 games this season. He has 64 blocked shots and 56 hits. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Swede has six goals and 59 points in 451 career games for San Jose, which selected him in the eighth round (No. 241) of the 1999 NHL Draft.

"San Jose has become home for me and I'm leaving with an empty feeling with the teams we had here not getting it done," Murray told the San Jose Mercury News on Monday. "But it's extremely exciting going to Pittsburgh, going to the best team in the league already. They always have some great players and I'm just excited to get there, get used to the team and take a run at the Stanley Cup."

It is the second major move by the Penguins in a 24-hour window. Sunday night, the team traded highly touted prospect, Joe Morrow, a defenseman, for Dallas captain Brenden Morrow, who they believe to be a top-nine forward on their team.
