Houck scores twice as Giants beat Royals

VANCOUVER - Jackson Houck scored twice in the third period as the Vancouver Giants downed the visiting Victoria Royals 3-1 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

Carter Popoff scored in the first period for the Giants (20-47-2), who made up for a 5-3 loss against Victoria on Friday.

Jamie Crooks scored the lone goal for the Royals (33-28-7), who have dropped 12 of their last 13 games.

Payton Lee made 19 saves for the win as Coleman Vollrath turned away 37-of-39 shots in defeat.

Vancouver went the entire game without a power play while Victoria scored on its only chance with the man advantage.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
