Dallas Stars F Benn fined $10,000 for cross-checking Edmonton Oilers' Ryan Jones

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The NHL fined Stars forward Jamie Benn US$10,000 on Saturday for his cross-check on Oilers forward Ryan Jones.

Benn was given the maximum fine under the CBA for his hard cross-check on Jones during the third period of Edmonton's 5-1 blowout win Thursday in Dallas.

Jones was helped to the Oilers bench, while Benn was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct.

As a first-time offender, Benn could be fined was the lesser of $10,000 or one-half of his daily salary. The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
