WHL Roundup: Feser has five points as the Americans crush the Oil Kings 8-1

Justin Feser scored once and set up four more as the Tri-City Americans crushed the struggling Edmonton Oil Kings 8-1 on Saturday in Western Hockey League play.

Feser's five-point performance extended his point streak to five games and includes seven goals and 11 assists. His 38 goals and 92 points in 61 contests moves him into fifth spot in WHL scoring.

Edmonton, which leads the Eastern Conference standings, dropped its season-high third game in a row and head coach Derek Laxdal wasn't pleased with his club's performance.

"This is the not the Edmonton team that has won 43 games," Laxdal said. "This is our third straight loss. We have to find a way to get out of the doldrums. This was probably our worst game of the year. Take nothing away from Tri-City, they came with energy. This is a tough building to play in."

Jesse Mychan scored twice and added an assist for the Americans (36-22-3), who are on a five-game win streak, and Connor Rankin had a goal and two assists.

Zachary Yuen and Mitch Topping had a goal and an assist apiece while Fraser Bulbuc and Beau McCue added single goals to round out Tri-City's offence.

Bulbuc's goal was the first of his WHL career and came in just his third game.

Henrik Samuelsson scored the lone goal for the Oil Kings (43-15-5).

Tri-City's Troy Trombley stopped 36-of-37 shots to improve to 5-0-0 on the season as Edmonton's Laurent Brossoit allowed eight goals on 36 shots in defeat.

The Americans found success with their power play as they went 3 for 4, while the Oil Kings failed to score on their only opportunity with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Saskatoon 7, Moose Jaw 1; Kootenay 5, Calgary 1; Everett 3, Seattle 2 (OT); Medicine Hat 2, Swift Current 0; Red Deer 4, Prince Albert 2; Portland 6, Prince George 1; Spokane 2, Kamloops 0 and Kelowna 7, Victoria 2.

At Kennewick, Wash., Topping opened the scoring at 18:11 of the first period.

Yuen gave Tri-City a two-goal lead 1:44 into the second period before Samuelsson responded for Edmonton 35 seconds later.

McCue and Feser added two more goals for the Americans for a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Rankin made it 5-1 just 43 seconds into the third period and Bulbuc found the board at 8:05.

Mychan found the back of the net twice in the final 11 minutes of the game as the Oil Kings gave up eight goals for the first time since an 8-2 defeat to the Swift Current Broncos on Sept. 1st.
