QMJHL Roundup: Drouin extends point streak to 18 games as Mooseheads double up Cataractes

Jonathan Drouin extended his point streak to 18 games Friday as the Halifax Mooseheads downed the visiting Shawinigan Cataractes 6-3 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League play.

The 17-year-old winger scored once and added an assist for the Mooseheads (44-6-3), and now has 18 goals and 37 points during his run. His 18-game streak is also the longest of any player in the QMJHL this season, surpassing Rimouski Oceanic forward Alexandre Lavoie's streak of 17 straight games with at least one point between Oct. 10th and Nov. 23rd.

In 37 games, Drouin has a total of 33 goals and 77 points, which places him sixth in league scoring.

Matt Murphy, Darcy Ashley and Mathew Boudreau also had a goal and an assist each for Halifax, which improved to 24-2-1 on home ice, and Luca Ciampini chipped in with three assists.

Brian Lovell and Dominic Beauchemin scored a goal apiece to round out the Mooseheads' offence.

Kris Hodge had a goal and an assist for the Cataractes (14-35-7), who lost in regulation for the first time in four outings, while JC Campagna and Alex Pawelczyk added a goal each.

Halifax's back up goaltender Chris Clarke only had to make eight saves for the victory as Shawinigan's Hugo Campeau turned aside 32 shots in a losing cause.

The Mooseheads went 0 for 2 on the power play while the Cataractes scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: P.E.I. 5, Acadie-Bathurst 2; Saint John 4, Moncton 2; Gatineau 5, Sherbrooke 3; Quebec 4, Baie-Comeau 3; Blainville-Boisbriand 4, Cape Breton 1; Val-d'Or 5, Chicoutimi 4 (SO); Drummondville 5, Rouyn-Noranda 4 (OT) and Victoriaville 6, Rimouski 5 (OT).

At Halifax, the Mooseheads jumped out to a four-goal lead before Shawinigan could muster up any sort of offence.

Boudreau and Drouin scored a minute apart in the first period to put Halifax up 2-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Lovell added another for the Mooseheads 3:24 into the second period and Beauchemin made it 4-0 at 5:04.

Pawelczyk finally got Shawingan on the board at 11:30, with what turned out to be his club's only shot on goal in the second period.

Campagna made it 4-2 1:13 into the third period, however Ashley responded for Halifax at 2:42.

Murphy made it 6-2 for the Mooseheads before Hodge added a late goal for the Cataractes.

At Saint John, N.B., Sebastien Auger stopped 44-of-46 shots and Connor Donaghey's second-career QMJHL goal stood up as the winner as the Sea Dogs (21-33-1) doubled up Moncton (34-19-1) for just their second win in their last 11 games.

At Sherbrooke, Que., Tomas Hyka had two goals and an assist while Olivier Knight-Rouleau scored once and set up two more as Gatineau (27-25-3) beat the Phoenix (15-34-6), who are 3-7-0 in their last 10 outings.

At Baie-Comeau, Que., Jeremy Beaudry scored two goals and Francois Brassard turned away 27 shots as Quebec (32-19-4) held on to beat the Drakkar (37-15-5) for its third win in its last four contests.

At Boisbriand, Que., Nikita Jevpalovs scored twice on the power play and Christopher Clapperton picked up three assists as the Armada (32-14-8) picked up at least one point in its eighth straight game by defeating Cape Breton (11-36-8).

At Chicoutimi, Que., Anton Zlobin had a goal and three assists in regulation and then scored the shootout winner and Francois Tremblay made 42 saves as Val-d'Or (31-22-3) earned its fifth straight victory by defeating the Sagueneens (24-27-6).

At Drummondville, Que., Mathew Boudens scored the winner 1:15 into overtime and Nikolas Brouillard had three goals and an assist as the Voltigeurs (30-20-4) came back from a 4-1 deficit to beat Rouyn-Noranda (31-21-4), which is on a four-game slide.

At Rimouski, Que., Michael Rheaume scored 2:09 into overtime and Philippe Halley had two goals and two assists as Victoriaville (25-23-8) won its third game straight by downing the Oceanic (37-12-7).
