Pietroniro scores winner as Shawinigan Cataractes edge Saint John Sea Dogs 3-2

SAINT JOHN, N.B. - Phil Pietroniro scored the winning goal with under three minutes left to play as the Shawinigan Cataractes edged the Saint John Sea Dogs 3-2 on Thursday in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Frank Schumacher and Frederick Gaudreau also scored for the Cataractes (14-34-7), with Marvin Cupper making 32 saves.

Michael Abbott scored his first Sea Dogs goal and Jakub Izacky added to his team lead (17) with another for Saint John (20-33-1), which dropped their second straight. Sebastien Auger made 23 saves on 26 shots.

Schumacher made it 1-0 Cataractes at 8:52 on a 3-on-1, the only scoring play of the period.

The Cataractes extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by the captain Gaudreau, whose shot trickled past Auger at 6:56 of the second.

In the third Stephen Anderson found Abbott alone on the point where he teed up his first as a Sea Dog at 7:16.

Nine minutes later the Sea Dogs tied it when Cupper made a save on Pierre Durepos but Izacky followed up and banged home the rebound.

Quote of the Day

I remember the first time at Wrigley Field all of us had the long johns, the turtlenecks and the extra equipment because we were afraid of being cold. Halfway through the first period everybody's ripping everything off and we just ended up wearing what we would normally wear for a game at the United Center.
