QMJHL Roundup: Halifax Mooseheads holds off Rimouski Oceanic 5-4 in shootout

The Halifax Mooseheads retained their supremacy in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League — but they needed a shootout to do it.

MacKenzie Weeger scored in the sixth round of the shootout as league-leading Halifax rallied to beat the Rimouski Oceanic 5-4 on Wednesday.

Rimouski held a 4-2 lead in the third period before goals by Mooseheads forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Frk sent the game to extra time.

Jonathan Drouin scored twice for Halifax (42-5-3), which won its third straight and moved 11 points ahead of second-place Rimouski.

Peter Trainor and Alexandre Lavoie each scored twice for the Oceanic (35-11-6), which had a 10-game winning streak snapped.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL it was: Baie-Comeau 8, Acadie-Bathurst 4; Blainville-Boisbriand 4, Chicoutimi 0; and Rouyn-Noranda 5, Shawinigan 3.

At Halifax, Drouin opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game, but Trainor tied it a little over a minute later and Lavoie's power-play goal at 9:06 gave Rimouski a 2-1 lead.

Lavoie scored his second at 5:14 in the second period, but Drouin cut the lead to one on the power play at 10:58.

Trainor scored five minutes into the third for a 4-2 Oceanic lead, but Frk scored with the man advantage at 8:48 and MacKinnon tied the game just under two minutes later.

Mooseheads goaltender Zachary Fucale and Rimouski goalie Robin Gusse each finished with 27 saves on 31 shots.
