The injury-plagued Detroit Red Wings took another hit when rookie defenseman Brendan Smith suffered a shoulder injury in the first period of Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Smith was hit hard by Columbus forward Derek MacKenzie and left the ice about halfway through the opening period. He did not return.

Detroit is without goaltender Jonas Gustavsson (groin), defensemen Ian White (leg laceration) and Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder), center Darren Helm (back), right wing Mikael Samuelsson (groin) and left wing Jan Mursak (collarbone).

"We're already on fumes, and then we lose [Brendan]," coach Mike Babcock said. "We don't know how long he’ll be out."

Quote of the Day

It was a big dream. [Messi] is probably the best athlete out there, so it's a big honor, for [Kuznetzov] as well. It's maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet the best player in soccer right now. I'm a big Barcelona fan and Messi fan, so it's huge. You can take [Michael] Jordan, [Mark] Messier, [Wayne] Gretzky, those kinds of [people]. It's an honor to meet. It's nice to be in that position.
