Paul Carey's short-handed goal leads Lake Erie Monsters past Abbotsford Heat 4-1

CLEVELAND - Paul Carey's short-handed goal got Lake Erie started on Thursday as the Monsters had four unanswered scores in a 4-1 victory over the Abbotsford Heat in American Hockey League play.

Carey also had an assist for Lake Erie (24-16-4), while Brad Malone and Bill Thomas had a goal and an assist each. Gabriel Beaupre added a goal of his own and Calvin Pickard made 23 saves for the win.

Captain Quintin Laing was the lone scorer for Abbotsford (22-14-7). Danny Taylor stopped 33 of 36 shots for the Heat in 43:01 of work. He was replaced by Barry Brust, who made seven saves on eight shots.

Both teams racked up several penalties. The Monsters had 29 minutes of penalties, while the Heat spent 31 minutes in the penalty box.

Lake Erie was 1 for 7 with the man advantage, while Abbotsford went 0 for 6.
