Sharks' Marleau continues scorching scoring start
Patrick Marleau has accomplished something no player has since the inaugural season of the NHL.

Patrick Marleau has accomplished something no player has since the inaugural season of the NHL.

Marleau scored twice in the first period Saturday for the San Jose Sharks against the Colorado Avalanche, and he has now registered multiple goals in each of the team's first four games this season. He is the first player to start with back-to-back-to-back-to-back multigoal games since Cy Denneny of the Ottawa Senators in 1917-18, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Marleau's eight goals in four games are more than six teams (Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings) have to this point. The previous fastest player in Sharks history to eight goals was Owen Nolan, who needed eight games to get there in 1999-2000.

Both of Marleau's goals against Colorado came during a four-minute power play. San Jose defenseman Brad Stuart hit Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog near the center red line, and Avalanche defenseman Ryan O'Bryne collected two minor penalties for instigating a fight with Stuart (the extra minor was assessed because O'Bryne wears a visor). Landeskog left the bench area immediately but returned during the second period.

While Marleau is scoring goals like crazy, linemate Joe Thornton is racking up assists and points at a prolific rate. He assisted on each of Marleau's goals in the first period Saturday before getting a goal of his own early in the second. Thornton has nine assists and a franchise-record 11 points in four games.
