Report: Holmstrom to retire Tuesday
It is expected that Tomas Holmstrom will announce his retirement Tuesday afternoon before Detroit's home opener against the Dallas Stars.

The Detroit Red Wings have announced a press conference for Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. ET at Joe Louis Arena, prior to their home opener against the Dallas Stars, where MLive.com is reporting forward Tomas Holmstrom will announce his retirement.

Holmstrom, who will turn 40 on Wednesday, won four Stanley Cups in 15 seasons with the team. A 1994 10th-round draft pick, he's sixth in games played for the franchise with 1,026.

In 15 seasons -- all with the Red Wings -- he had 243 goals and 530 points. He had at least 10 power-play goals seven times in 15 seasons, and his 122 power-play goals are third in team history. He also had 46 goals (19 on the power play) and 51 assists in 180 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Quote of the Day

I downplayed the first one because I thought it's just a hockey game. We just want to win the game; it's against our rival and we want the two points. I downplayed it, but now having gone through the first one I look back and say, 'Geez, that was really cool.' I think as I've grown a bit older I've got a lot more appreciation for what we're allowed to do every day.
