Hughes scores shootout winner as Niagara IceDogs defeat Owen Sound Attack 3-2

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Rookie centre Ben Hughes beat Jordan Binnington in the fifth round of the shootout Thursday as the Niagara IceDogs defeated the Owen Sound Attack 3-2 in the Ontario Hockey League.

Both Binnington and IceDogs goaltender Christopher Festarini were perfect through four rounds of the shootout before Hughes clinched the victory.

Steven Shipley and Brett Ritchie scored in regulation for Niagara (23-16-3), which got 29 saves from Festarini.

Daniel Catenacci and Chris Bigras replied for Owen Sound (25-12-3). Binnington made 23 saves in the loss, his first game since returning from the world junior hockey championship in Russia.

The IceDogs finished the night 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Attack went 1-for-4.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
