UFA, Russia - Vladimir Tkachyov scored the winning goal in the third period as Russia held on to beat the United States 2-1 on Friday at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.

Tkachyov scored 4:10 into the third as he put the puck past American goalie John Gibson following a terrific end-to-end rush by Valeri Nichushkin.

Forward Kirill Kapustin put Russia's lead in peril when he was given a minor penalty and 10-minute misconduct for checking from behind with 1:32 left in regulation. But The U.S. was unable to beat goaltender Andrei Makarov during the late power play.

Albert Yarullin had Russia's other goal on a power play. Defenceman Jacob Trouba replied for the U.S. (1-0-0-1) with a goal on a man advantage.

Makarov, who plays for the Western Hockey League's Saskatoon Blades, was outstanding, making 41 saves.

Gibson stopped 28 shots for the Americans.

Russia (1-1-0-0) moved to second in Group B with five points on a regulation win and an overtime win.

Canada leads the group with six points, the U.S. is third with three, Slovakia has one and Germany is last with no points.

Russia next plays winless Germany on Saturday, while the U.S. meets rival Canada on Sunday.
